In Memory of Bix
A Volunteer Shares Her Son’s Love of Venice Theatre
By Karen Kelly, Molière’s The Learned Ladies Show Sponsor
Venice Theare changed my life.
In 2019, a friend of mine who had become a professional actor in midlife encouraged me to audition at the theatre even though I knew no one there and had never acted, not even in a high school play. Kelly Woodland cast me as Dottie in Good People—a part coveted by actors far more experienced than me. It was a transformative experience because of the creative process and the friendships forged backstage.
My son Bix was 12 at the time and was so proud of me when many kids his age would have been mortified of seeing their mom on stage. He loved Good People so much he saw it three times—a super fan. I went on to act in Gulf View Drive shortly before the pandemic temporarily shut things down.

The unthinkable happened just as the theatre and life were starting to get back to normal. Bix, our wise, funny, and supportive 15-year-old died in a car crash. My husband, Randy Sandke, and I went into a tailspin. Three days later Ian hit us and devastated Venice Theatre. Slowly, over the next two years, we learned how to live in a new way. I went back to theatre with the support and encouragement of so many, including theatre friends.
As a Show Sponsor of Molière’s The Learned Ladies, I have a chance to give back to an institution that has given so much to me. I have many friends on and back stage in the play, making it a meaningful way to support them and the theatre. By sponsoring a play, more funds can go toward restoration of the theatre, which I consider to be the heartbeat of Venice. It is also a way for me to honor my precious son who loved to see his mom on stage and who knew and loved many of my theatre pals. Philanthropy is a wonderful gift we give to ourselves. I hope my story inspires others to support the community and the arts in any way they can.
To honor a loved one through a gift to our beloved community theatre, please contact my friend, Camille (camille@venicetheatre.net or 941.867.8607) and she’ll gently guide you through the process.
